This gripping, beautifully acted suspense film was directed by Jannik Johansen (Stealing Rembrandt) and co-written by Anders Thomas Jensen (Brothers, Adam’s Apples). At its center is Jacob (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), a Copenhagen-based hack journalist whose sister, Julie (Lotte Bergstrom), is mildly brain damaged and wheelchair-bound after attempting suicide. At a family gathering, Julie shocks everyone by announcing her pending marriage toa plump, good-natured nerd, Anker (Nicolas Bro), whom she met via the Internet. But just as the happy couple should be enjoying their honeymoon, Anker is heard keening with grief and found clutching his wife’s bloody body: Julie has slit herwrists and died. Despite his sister’s history, something about the tragedy nags at Jacob. When he discovers that Anker may have been widowed once before, he pursues his former brother-in-law to a remote, gloomy town called Mørke (“Darkness” in Danish) to uncover the truth. - 124 minutes – Psychological Thriller - 2005
