We Shall Overcome
Drømmen

Saturday, January 26, 5 p.m., Rich Theatre

The impact made by Martin Luther King's message of non-violent resistance is the theme of this stirring, beautifully acted film that's based on real events. Set in a small Danish town in 1969, it centers on 13 year old Frits (Janus Dissing-Rathke), a middle-schooler who learns about Dr. King when his mother, a school nurse, buys the family's first TV set. The new source of entertainment is welcome since Frits's father has been hospitalized for depression. Being taunted by his classmates over his father’s illness is torture, but it pales in comparison to what Frits suffers at the hands of his school's abusive principal, who nearly twists off Frits's ear after he's caught spying on the girl's locker room. Hippie teacher, Freddie takes him to the doctor for stitches and nurtures Frits's impulse to protest. The militaristic principal, who is alternately admired or feared in the conservative town, is a formidable opponent, but inspired by Martin Luther King's example, Frits refuses to be intimidated. Winner of multiple awards, including Best Children's Film at the Berlin International Film Festival, We Shall Overcome is appropriate for older elementary school and middle school students who can read subtitles. (Denmark, 2006, 105 minutes). In Danish with subtitles.
